Restricted use of student Personal Digital Devices at school

New Rules for Student Cell Phones in Schools

The Ministry of Education and Child Care has amended the Provincial Standards for Codes of Conduct Order, effective July 1, 2024. The amendment required all boards of education to include one or more statements restricting student use of personal digital devices (including cell phones) at school, effective for the start of the 2024-25 school year.

The Board of Education of School District No. 59 (PRS) adopted Policy to include the following statements:

  • Personal digital devices at the elementary school level will not be permitted at any time during the school day.
  • Personal digital devices at the middle and secondary school level will not be permitted during instructional time, bell-to-bell. Personal digital devices are allowed during breaks.

Note: exemptions will be made when they are needed as an essential support tool for learning and deemed necessary to support medical needs.
